Beverage Can Packaging: When to Move from Digital to Offset

Packaging is one of the most consequential cost decisions a growing beverage brand will make — and one of the most commonly mistimed. Understanding the progression from labels, pressure-sensitive labels, or sleeves to offset cans can save you real money and improve margins. Here's what you need to know to balance the cost of goods while managing inventory and why timing matters.
The Packaging Progression Every Beverage Brand Goes Through
Most brands move through the same stages as they scale.
Labels and Shrink Sleeves had their moment — and for good reason. During the craft beverage boom of the 2010s, and again during the supply chain chaos of COVID, brands needed maximum flexibility and small MOQs fast. Blank "brite" cans with applied labels or heat-shrink sleeves were the most accessible answer: low commitment, quick design pivots, and no massive packaging inventory to sit on.
That era shaped a lot of the brands you see on shelves today. But as supply chains stabilized and digital printing matured, the tradeoffs are becoming harder to justify. Both methods can add an additional step on the packaging line or slow production, which steadily erodes margins as volume grows. For most scaling brands, labels and sleeves are now a starting point — not a destination.
Digital Printing is the game changer for emerging brands. Artwork is printed directly onto the aluminum can, eliminating the labeling step entirely. Cans arrive decorated and ready to run, which meaningfully improves line efficiency. MOQs are lower than traditional methods, and design changes — seasonal releases, limited editions — are fast and manageable.
The transition isn't always an easy internal sell, though. At a previous brewery, adopting digital cans took real convincing — marketing was reluctant to abandon the familiar. We compromised by piloting digital on a few smaller specialty runs, and the results on the floor spoke for themselves. Marketing loved the seamless 360-degree canvas; operations was thrilled by the efficiency gains. Eliminating the labor required with the additional step to label cans meant hitting packaging numbers faster and with less waste. It didn't take long for digital to become our undisputed go-to for low to mid-tier volume runs.
For most brands in the growth phase, digital is the smart middle ground before the volume and stability needed for offset are truly there.
Offset Printing is the gold standard at scale. Used by the largest beverage companies, offset delivers the lowest cost per can and maximum production efficiency. The trade-off: it requires large MOQs, typically hundreds of thousands of units per SKU ordered by the truckload. Commit too early and you're sitting on dead inventory. Offset also limits some of the graphic flexibility that digital printing offers.
Four Signals You're Ready for Offset
There's no magic volume number, but these indicators tell you the transition makes financial sense:
Your sales velocity is predictable. Confident demand forecasting dramatically reduces the risk of holding large packaging inventory.
You're running large, consistent batches. If the same SKUs are running regularly at high volume, the per-can savings of offset will immediately improve your margins.
Retail expansion is driving volume. Distribution into grocery chains or national programs usually creates the scale where offset becomes the obvious economic choice.
Your brand design is locked in. Offset is not for experimentation. Stable packaging artwork is a prerequisite for the economics to work.
The Bottom Line
Packaging decisions aren't just about aesthetics — they directly shape your cost structure, line efficiency, and go to market strategy. The good news is that there's a right format for every stage of growth, and making the right call at the right time is one of the clearest levers a beverage brand has for protecting margins and scaling efficiently.
What matters most isn't choosing the "best" format — it's choosing the right one for where your business is today, with a clear plan for when to make the next move. At Craftsmith, we help brands think through these decisions early, long before packaging becomes a bottleneck. From pilot runs to high-volume production planning, our goal is simple: build a production strategy that scales right alongside you.
